Duke, Kansas, Illinois and Oregon in the mix for college basketball prospect Dame Sarr

One of the best international prospects considering coming over to play college basketball is Dame Sarr, a 6’7 small forward from Italy, playing semi-pro ball in Barcelona. Sarr is an elite athlete with great two-way potential. Projected as a five-star caliber prospect, many top-tier teams have shown interest in Sarr, who could also be an NBA Draft candidate if fully eligible.

Assuming he ultimately goes the college route, four programs have been in the mix to land Sarr. Here’s a look at how he’d fit with each option.

Duke Blue Devils

Freshman star wing Kon Knueppel is off to the NBA, leaving the three-spot potentially open. That depends on what transfer commit Cedric Coward decides, as he’s currently in the draft process. If he comes back, he’s the likely starter as a proven 3 and D sharpshooting option. Sarr could still join the team in a limited role, but it wouldn’t be as appealing. Plus, waiting on another player’s actions will affect his recruitment with other team options.

Illinois Fighting Illini

Early on, it felt as if the Illini were the favorites. Things may have cooled off, as the team opted to land 17 ppg scoring transfer wing, Andrej Stojakovic, instead. They could still move him to the two-spot and have Sarr on the wings, though the shooting would become a major question. There’s a good chance that both sides have moved on, but Coach Brad Underwood could always use another international player to join the roster.

Kansas Jayhawks

The three-spot was a major point of weakness for the team last season. Right now, St. Bonaventure transfer Melvin Council Jr. and former Illinois forward Tre White are set to get the minutes there. If Sarr were to pick Kansas, White could easily move to the four-spot and form an incredibly versatile defensive frontcourt for next season. Plus, Coach Bill Self, even in his potential final years in college, is still a massive appeal for a prospect with pro aspirations.

Oregon Ducks

The Ducks are a darkhorse team to watch, as they could offer the biggest role for next season. Sarr would be the third option on offense, behind Nathan Bittle and Jackson Shelstad. He’d start without question, and Coach Dana Altman has developed players into future NBA players, though former 5-star prospects Kwame Evans and Mookie Cook haven’t worked out for the team.
