CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (13-14 5-7 ACC) fell 11-9 in ten innings to Rhode Island (16-12, 6-3 A10) on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first, the visitors took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run to left field. They added four in the third on three hits and three walks, going up 6-0. Jacob Burnham came in to pitch the fourth and settled things down, striking out three over two scoreless frames, with just two hits allowed. Burnham finished his season’s best outing after three shutout innings, striking out three with just two hits allowed.
The Eagles got on the board in the fifth, with Patrick Roche reaching on a hit-by-pitch, his third time reaching in as many at-bats. Two batters later, and Kyle Wolff singled for the second time in three at-bats, this time scoring Roche from second to make it 6-1 after five full. The BC offense added three more in the sixth to make it a two-run game. Esteban Garcia came in to pinch hit with the bases loaded and brought one across, and two batters later, Roche logged his third hit of the day, a two-run single to cut the defiict. Roche finished 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
Sam McNulty narrowed the gap to 6-5 with an RBI groundout in the 7th, and capped off the top of the eighth with a critical double-play turn, leaping over the incoming runner at second base.
The Eagles’ offense did not stop there. Austin Hartsell reached to lead off the bottom of the eighth, and after a double from Beck Milner, Patrick Roche delivered again, picking up his fourth hit with a two-run single to put BC in front 7-6. Josiah Ragsdale continued the rally, roping a double down the left-field line, scoring Roche and reaching third on the throw. Ragsdale came across on a wild pitch, giving the Eagles a 9-6 advantage, with the offense plating nine unanswered runs to take a three-run lead in the eighth.
Rhode Island answered, bringing three across in the top of the ninth to draw even at 9-9. To begin extras, the visitors worked the bases loaded and plated two more, taking an 11-9 lead in the tenth. The Rams held the lead, taking Wednesday’s contest in extras.
The Eagles will hit the road for a three-game set at Louisville starting Friday night.
