Eagles hiring Jalen Hurts’ QB coach by uniquely luring a college football head coach

INDIANAPOLIS − Jalen Hurts has a new quarterbacks coach as the Eagles dipped into the college ranks to hire Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler.

The Eagles have yet to announce the move Friday morning, but Bowling Green made the announcement on its website.

Loeffler, 50, replaced Doug Nussmeier, who left last week to become the Saints offensive coordinator under Kellen Moore, who was the Eagles’ OC before getting hired as the Saints coach two weeks ago.

Loeffler was the head coach for Bowling Green for the past six seasons. He played quarterback at Michigan and began his coaching career in 1997 as a graduate assistant, working with Tom Brady when he was the Wolverines’ QB.

Loeffler went 27-41 at Bowling Green, but posted winning records at 7-6 in each of the last two seasons after inheriting a program that had gone 9-27 in the three seasons before his arrival.

Loeffler has an extensive college coaching career, with stops at Florida, Temple, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Boston College serving as either a QB coach or offensive coordinator. He also served as the Lions‘ QB coach in 2008, when Detroit went 0-16.

For Hurts, Loeffler will become his fourth QB coach in five seasons. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said this week at the NFL scouting combine that he wanted a QB coach who could bring “new thoughts, new schemes, new ideas to the table.”

Loeffler, in his extensive career under several different coaches, could fit the bill. At Bowling Green, his tight end, Harold Fannin Jr., led all FBS receivers with 117 catches for 1,555 yards. He could be a possible target for the Eagles in the draft.
