It’s always a fun exercise after every college basketball season comes to a close to look ahead, especially concerning the championship potential for every fan’s favorite team. For Texas A&M, the Buzz Williams era ended last Tuesday, leading to Athletic Director Trev Albert’s risky but exciting choice to hire former Samford head coach Bucky McMillan, who was officially introduced on Monday afternoon.
McMillan’s future is bright, and at the young age of 41, he will enter as one of the youngest head coaches in the SEC, joining 39-year old Florida head coach Todd Golden, who led the Gators to the 2025 National Championship on Monday night.
McMillan’s high-scoring Samford offenses may not translate as soon as next season. Still, you can be sure his coaching demeanor and analytics-based approach could lead to immediate success if he can build a respectable roster through the transfer portal in the coming months. McMillan’s hiring signals higher expectations for the Aggies moving forward, including legitimate championship aspirations compared to Buzz WIlliams’ predictable tenure.
Texas A&M roster has just one player, sophomore forward Chris McDermott, so any chance at competing for more than a surprise NCAA Tournament bid is likely off the table, but for the sake of discussing early title odds in the SEC, here are BetMGM’s latest CBB National Championship odds for the top six SEC teams, and Texas A&M. Texas A&M’s odds are understandably low, given the current state of the roster and McMillen’s first season.
