Eastern Michigan-CMU basketball game flagged for unusual wagering activity

Tuesday’s Mid-American Conference men’s college basketball game between Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan has prompted an investigation.

According to a report by ESPN on Friday night, betting integrity firms are investigating unusual wagering activity surrounding the Eagles and Chippewas’ game.

Integrity Compliance 360, a sports betting monitor company, sent an alert on Wednesday to its clients — which includes sportsbooks, state gaming regulators, leagues and NCAA conferences — in regard to an unusual activity from someone who attempted placing a bet on Central Michigan to cover the spread in the first half.

What prompted the suspicion of unusual activity was the size of the wager placed, which reportedly was their “largest wager to date.”

“While investigating, the operator also found two other high stakes wagers from two accounts in a different jurisdiction, both on Central Michigan 1st Half spread,” the alert read, per ESPN.

As noted by ESPN, the point spread on the first half of the game opened at Central Michigan -3.5 and moved to -6.5 in the hour that led up to tipoff. Central Michigan’s Damarion Bonds hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to put the Chippewas up 39-33 going into halftime. Eastern Michigan would go onto lose the game 82-63 to move to 1-3 in MAC play.

This isn’t the first instance of suspicious betting activity surrounding Eastern Michigan this season. There was also an alert sent out by Integrity Compliance 360 following Eastern Michigan’s game vs. Wright State on Dec. 21. ESPN reports both incidents saw bets against the Eagles.

“We became aware of the matter on Wednesday and a review is underway,” a spokesperson for Eastern Michigan told ESPN in a statement. “At this time we do not know anything further about what may have precipitated the suspicious activity. We are working with the Mid-American Conference and will provide further details as we learn additional information.”

The Eagles are the latest college basketball team to come under scrutiny for unusual betting activity. Temple basketball remains under investigation for several of its games last season being flagged for unusual betting activity, including a game vs. UAB.

Eastern Michigan is 7-9 overall on the season and tied for eighth place in the MAC. The Eagles are scheduled to take on Bowling Green on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
