El Paso Community College baseball team earns postseason bid and will visit Weatherford

The El Paso Community College baseball team is headed to the post season for the first time since 2008.

The Tejanos will play in the National Junior College Athletic Region 5 Tournament and will visit Weatherford College, who is ranked No. 3 in the country in the latest Division 1 rankings.

The winner advances to a Super Regional double-elimination tournament on May, 15-17. The winner of the Super Regional tournament advances to the 2025 NJCAA College World Series.

EPCC enters the playoffs with a 39-17 record and Weatherford College is 44-11.

EPCC vs. Weatherford series details

The two teams will play at Roger Williams Ballpark, Weatherford, Texas, in a best two of three series.

The teams will play noon CST/11 a.m MST on Thursday and Friday and if a third game is needed, they will play at noon Saturday.

How did EPCC make the playoffs?

The Tejanos earned the fourth Western Junior College Athletic Conference playoff spot by defeating Frank Phillips College 6-3 and 15-5 in five innings on May 3. EPCC won the tie breaker with Howard College on power points, 73 to 70. Both EPCC and Howard finished 21-15 during conference play in the regular season.

The Tejanos enter the playoffs having won seven of their past eight games.

  • Alan Nava. The former Del Valle High School standout has 13 home runs and 52 RBI.
  • Roberto Chaparro. The former Pebble Hills High School standout has 28 runs scored and 35 RBI.
  • Jack Gallegos. The former star pitcher at Del Valle High School won seven games on the mound in the regular season.
  • Carlos Mauldin. The infielder hit 14 homers and drove in 53 runs.
  • Salvador Rocha. The outfielder drove in 40 runs and scored 42 runs.

“This team really has a strong bond, they play for each other,” Soucy said. “I felt this year’s team had a chance to make the playoffs from day one.”

“We felt like this season, we had a good chance to make the playoffs,” Chaparro said. “We have had a strong chemistry all year. Our hitting has been strong all year and that’s been a key.”
