The New York Yankees have started a new wave in Major League Baseball. The Yankees hit 15 home runs in three games against the Milwaukee Brewers. Five of their players were using what is being called the “torpedo bat,” which is essentially a bat that moves wood from other parts of the bat into the barrel, making the barrel slightly larger and giving it more mass.
Austin Wells, Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger are all using the torpedo bats, and all five went yard in the Yankees’ first series. The bats are not necessarily new, as Giancarlo Stanton used one in the postseason last year, but the Yankees’ home run barrage has prompted more players to try them out.
On Monday night, Cincinnati Reds superstar Elly De La Cruz used a torpedo bat in a game for the first time. The result was a 4-for-5 outing with seven RBIs and two home runs. De La Cruz spoke on the experience after the game.
“It feels good,” he replied to reporters when asked about the bat.

De La Cruz said he had used the bat in practice, but it seemed to have a great effect when he brought it on to the field when it mattered. De La Cruz also revealed what prompted him to try changing to the new bat.
“I just wanted to know if it felt good, and it felt good,” he told reporters.
De La Cruz’s teammate, Jose Trevino, has been using the torpedo bat since spring training last year. De La Cruz noted that Trevino had talked about it in spring training, but he had not considered using it until seeing what the Yankees did against the Brewers. When asked if he will continue using the bat, he reportedly just laughed.
