On the heels of consecutive trips to the College Football Playoff semifinals, Texas is a preseason darling entering the 2025 season.

Coach Steve Sarkisian returns a number of key performers on defense, but the real excitement for Texas stems from the move to Arch Manning at quarterback. The latest Heisman Trophy odds have Manning as the favorite to hoist the coveted award. The latest national championship odds give Texas the second-shortest odds to win a title. At DraftKings, Texas is -350 to make the CFP.

ESPN’s Joe Fortenbaugh said Friday morning on Get Up that offseason love for Texas in the betting markets has created an opportunity to sell high on the Longhorns entering the new year.

“They might be the most overvalued team in all of college football this year. The win total’s 10.5. You’re only playing 12 games,” Fortenbaugh said. “I bet the under. All we need are 2 losses. I see them losing to Ohio State to open the season, and then as you work your way down [the schedule] there are plenty of problems — road game at Florida, road game at Georgia. [Texas has the] fourth-toughest schedule in the nation, so, yeah, under 10.5. I think this is a team that is very overvalued.”

Texas went 11-1 in the regular season last fall, losing only to Georgia at home on Oct. 19. Texas also went 11-1 during the 2023 regular season, dropping a midseason game to Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl before closing with 6 straight wins to make the Big 12 title game.

From 2001-09, Texas won at least 10 games every year. However, the Longhorns didn’t go 3 consecutive seasons without multiple regular-season losses at any point during that stretch. They had a chance in 2006, but went 9-3. They had another chance to do so in 2010, but fell to 5-7 after a national runner-up finish.

You’d have to go back to 1968-70 to find the last time Texas went 3 consecutive seasons without multiple regular-season losses.

Texas begins the season in Columbus on Aug. 30. The lookahead line from DraftKings has Ohio State favored by 3 points in that matchup. Want to bet on the 2025 season? Check out our guide on the best sports betting apps to land a sign-up bonus.
