The computers behind the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) are expecting another rough year in East Lansing, Mich. in 2025.
The preseason FPI ratings and rankings were released earlier this week, and its not particularly high on the Spartans. At this point in time, FPI has Michigan State ranked as the No. 59 team nationally — which comes out to No. 15 out of 18 teams from the Big Ten. Among power four conferences (plus Notre Dame), Michigan State ranked No. 56 out of 68 teams.
As far as how many games will the Spartans win this year, FPI is projecting it to again be a bowl-less season. FPI has predicted Michigan State to finish 5-7 in 2025, with a 42.4% chance to reach bowl eligibility.
The projections from ESPN’s FPI tool aren’t all that surprising as these type of metrics aren’t going to shed must positive light on Michigan State. However, I personally take FPI with a grain of salt as I’m not sure how truly accurate this tool is in today’s modern world of college football where the transfer portal is so prevalent in roster construction. So keep that in mind when considering what FPI is projecting for the Spartans this fall.
Michigan State comes into this season with three straight losing seasons, and looking to get back into the postseason for the first time in four years. The Spartans will open the 2025 season against Western Michigan on August 29 at Spartan Stadium.
