We’re a week away from BYU’s regular season opener November 5 versus Central Arkansas. We are getting our first taste of real action, as BYU beat Boise State in a closed scrimmage over the weekend and plays Colorado Christian in an exhibition Wednesday.
Egor Demin was BYU’s first 5-star commitment in program history this summer and is one of the most intriguing freshman in the country. Demin’s passing ability and vision at 6-foot-9 makes him a unicorn of sorts in college basketball, but the mystery surrounding him adds to the intrigue since he hasn’t played at the AAU or grassroots level.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf released their top 100 players in college basketball going into the season and Egor is BYU’s lone player at #89. He is the 11th-highest rated freshman. Below is what ESPN wrote.
“A Russia native who played extensive minutes at Real Madrid, Demin is expected to make a significant impact for Kevin Young’s first team at BYU. At 6-9, he poses matchup problems for opponents, given his vision and ability to pick apart defenses via the pass or operating out of a pick-and-roll. He’ll have the ball in his hands often, and Young’s NBA-style offense will benefit from him too.”
Egor is a projected lottery pick by many pundits and showed off his passing ability during Saturday’s scrimmage. He didn’t do a ton of scoring versus Boise State but led all players with 8 assists. Egor will team with Dallin Hall to form arguably the best passing backcourt in college basketball. I expect his scoring numbers to get to double digits as well; Kevin Young was bullish on Egor’s shooting potential when I talked to him last month.
Egor will carve teams up with his passing and feel for the game. If he can be a consistent three-point shooter then he will rocket up the list of best college basketball players and one of the best in the Big 12.
