Steve Toyloy, a former center for the University of Cincinnati’s basketball team, has passed away, the school has announced. He was just 37.
A cause of death has not been revealed.
‘Cincinnati basketball mourns the loss of Steve Toyloy, a Bearcat from 2008 to 2010. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family, teammates, and all who knew him,’ read a social media post from the school.
Toyloy was a key player for then-Bearcats coach Mick Cronin from 2008 through 2010. The West Palm Beach, Florida native transferred to the Bearcats after attending junior college, but soon found himself playing alongside future NBA star Lance Stephenson with the Bearcats.
After college, Toyloy played professionally in Turkey, Brazil, Uruguay and Malaysia, where he won a Finals MVP back in 2019.
Alex Meacham, another former Bearcat, responded on X, writing: ‘RIP Steve Toyloy.’

Toyloy wasn’t a prolific scorer and struggled mightily at the free-throw stripe, where he made only 50.5 percent of his attempts over two college seasons.
However, the 6-foot-8 bruiser was a good rebounder, who averaged 3.5 boards a game in 15.8 minutes of action.
Toyloy was also remembered by the NBB, Brazil’s league.
‘We offer our condolences to friends and family,’ read the translated social media post from his former NBB team, Basquete Palestrino.
One South American basketball reporter also commented on Toyloy’s career in Brazil and Uruguay.
‘Terrible news about the death of Steve Toyloy, the foreigner who defended @ClubUrunday
in the Metro 2011 and the Uruguayan League 2016/17, playing for several years also in the
@NBB of Brazil, the last one had been in Malaysia at the end of 2023, he was 36 years old,’ read the translated post from Fer Martínez Larrosa.
It’s unclear where Toyloy was living at the time of his death.
