A college basketball player from Mississippi died in a tragic ATV accident over the weekend.
Cameron Woodall, a standout player who won a high school state championship for Raymond High School and a former Tougaloo College hooper, died after he lost control of the vehicle and overturned, Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard told WLBT.
He was 26 years old.
The accident occurred in Raymond, Mississippi on Midway Road around 11:25 p.m. on Saturday while Woodall and another person on a second ATV were driving down the roadway.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, AMR, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department and the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident.
Woodall died from his injuries and the second person was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the untimely passing of Cameron D. ‘Big Cam’ Woodall, a beloved former Tougaloo College men’s basketball standout,” Tougaloo athletics wrote on its Instagram page. “Known for his larger-than-life presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and kind-hearted spirit off it, Cam left an indelible mark on the Tougaloo family. “His impact extended far beyond basketball; he was a friend, a brother, and a true Bulldog through and through. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the accident, which is currently ongoing.
“My heart goes out to the family, friends, many loved ones, and Raymond High School and the Raymond basketball community,” Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones told WLBT.
Woodall helped Raymond High win state championships in 2017 and 2018 before going on to play in college at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and then for Tougaloo College, most recently in 2022-23.
