Jordan Petaia is one step closer to making a successful transition from rugby union to the NFL after signing a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The 25-year-old confirmed he had joined forces with the Chargers after impressing during his time in the NFL’s international player pathway program.
If he is to be fielded by the Chargers in the upcoming season, he will become the first Wallabies player to compete in the NFL.

Petaia will join the team as a tight end, where he’s primarily been training, although it is an uncommon role for a former rugby player.
The Chargers revealed Petaia’s talents at a pro-day event at the University of South Florida in late March was the deciding factor in his signing.
“I’m excited to be a part of the family,” Petaia said in a video announcing his signing.
“Keen to get stuck in. Bolt up.”
The ex-Queensland Reds star represented Australia in 31 Tests but decided to take his shot at the NFL following the completion of the 2023 season.
“You can’t stay young forever,” he said.
“It is definitely something I felt I probably would have regretted if I didn’t try.”
