Mississippi State (22-14) and Southern (15-19) will face off Tuesday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6 PM CT. The game can be streamed on the ESPN App and heard on the Bulldog Baseball radio network.
The Bulldogs had a four-game road trip last week in which they posted a 3-1 record. State knocked off UAB during the midweek and then took two-of-three from Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Southern dropped a midweek contest against UNO and then took the weekend series from Alcorn State two games to on. The middle game of the series with the Braves was a wild one with the Jaguars emerging victorious by the score of 23-19. Following Tuesday’s game in Starkville, Southern will hit the road to Arkansas-Pine Bluff for their next SWAC series. The Jags are currently 7-8 in league play.
Mississippi State is 11-3-1 all-time against Southern. Back in the 1910s, the two were somewhat regular opponents with every game played in Greensboro, Alabama. The series was renewed back in 2018. The Diamond Dawgs have taken all four meetings this century.
Coach Chris Crenshaw leads the Jaguar baseball program. A former Jaguar himself, Crenshaw was named the interim coach when former Jag skipper Kerrick Jackson left the program to become the President of the Major League Baseball draft league ahead of the 2021 college baseball season. That season, Crenshaw led Southern to a SWAC conference championship and spot in the NCAA tournament field.
Southern elected to remove the interim tag making Crenshaw the seventh baseball coach since the program resumed operations back in 1949. Southern has posted a 107-137 record during the Crenshaw era.
Crenshaw was gracious enough to give us some time this afternoon to discuss the season, his history with SU and his thoughts on the match-up with Mississippi State.
