FAMU football signee Sammy Mitchell IV’s decision was simple: ‘I want to continue the legacy.’

Signed, sealed, and delivered.

On last Wednesday’s National Signing Day, Sammy Mitchell IV officially signed his letter of intent to join Florida A&M’s 2025 football team. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder out of Davie’s Western High School will play defensive end for the Rattlers.

Mitchell won’t arrive on FAMU’s campus until the summer after he graduates from Western on June 2. But the 18-year-old is already thinking about championships.

“I plan to get to work, grind, and hopefully get drafted,” Mitchell told the Tallahassee Democrat. “I’m trying to head back to the SWAC Championship like they did two years ago.”

By attending FAMU, Mitchell will follow in his father’s footsteps, Sammy III, who graduated from the School of Business and Industry in 2004.

The thought of becoming a legacy Rattler made Mitchell IV’s decision to come to FAMU easy.

“The fact that my dad also went there ― I just want to grow the legacy,” Mitchell IV explained. “It’s a good school to be at.”

His father said Mitchell IV held 15 scholarship offers to play college football.

FAMU rose to the top as the best fit for Mitchell IV to continue his football and academic career. He’s interested in studying journalism and sports science.

“He has the mental acuity to be a valuable asset to the program and will lock in to take it to the next level to go pro,” Mitchell III said. “Florida A&M University has been one of the most amazing opportunities to play D1 sports and from an academic perspective. It has a rich legacy and heritage. I’m honored and humbled about being able to have my son be able to walk the grounds that I walked on back in 2000.”

FAMU football signee Sammy Mitchell has potential ‘to be a special player’

Mitchell has gotten well acquainted with FAMU head football coach James Colzie III and defensive line coach Casey Walker Sr. He said during his official visit two weeks ago, the coaches provided an outlook on what he can become for FAMU football.

“It felt good being around Coach Colzie and Coach Walker because they see me as a key to their defense and the program. I loved their hospitality,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell is a tall, lean speed rusher, which has garnered comparison to former FAMU All-American and 2021 Buck Buchanan Trophy winner Isaiah Land. Land just completed his second season in the National Football League as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

“He’s a young man who has the motor measurables and motor to be a special player wearing the Rattlers’ uniform,” said Colzie, speaking highly of Mitchell. “He has a great foundation that has been extremely supportive. We’re lucky to have him.”

FAMU football opens its 2025 season in Miami’s Orange Blossom Classic on Aug. 30 inside Hard Rock Stadium. The Labor Day weekend showdown near his hometown is Mitchell’s most anticipated game for his freshman season as FAMU pursues being HBCU football’s top team.

“That’s one game I’m looking forward to. It’s my favorite one on the whole schedule,” Mitchell said of his college football debut.
