Fantasy Basketball Picks: Top DraftKings NBA Starting 5 DFS Plays for February 1

Stan Son gives his top selections for DraftKings’ NBA Starting 5 for Saturday’s six-game slate.

DraftKings, your paradise of DFS nirvana, has done it again with a new contest called NBA Starting 5. You select one point guard, one shooting guard, one small forward, one power forward and one center. There is no salary cap. The only stipulation is that you must select players from at least two different teams.

For Saturday’s Starting 5 slate, there are six games.

CHA, DEN, PHO and SAS are playing the second leg of a back-to-back.

As for injuries, Alperen Sengun, Josh Hart, Jalen Suggs, Bennedict Mathurin, Andrew Nembhard, Mike Conley, Gabe Vincent, Dorian Finney-Smith, Malcolm Brogdon and Johnny Juzang are questionable. Anthony Davis, Julius Randle, Clint Capela, Alex Sarr and Noah Clowney are out. Keep track of all the pertinent injury updates at DK Live.

On DraftKings Sportsbook, the BKN/HOU game isn’t up yet. For the remaining five games, there are three double-digit favorites: DEN -14.5 over CHA, MIN -16.5 over WAS and OKC -10 over SAC. There is only one game with a total over 230: SAC/OKC (233). There are no games below 220.

Point Guard

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of, if not the best player in the NBA. He’s an unstoppable offensive force and chips in a little something something in every statistical category. He does get a boost in category leagues due to his insane efficiency and he only has two triple-doubles in his career, but you pretty much know what you’re going to get night in and night out for daily fantasy. While he likely finish in the 50-FPTS area, he has gone over 70 FPTS four times this season with a high of 81.5 FPTS.

Shooting Guard

Anthony Edwards began the year in meh fashion, as he was acclimating from KAT to Randle as a teammate. In addition, defenses began to blitz and double him more while he morphed into Steph Curry, hoisting away from downtown. Since the start of the new year, though, Edwards has figured out some things and become more aggressive. He’s put up at least 50 FPTS seven times with five of those over 60 FPTS. On Thursday, he finished with 69 FPTS against a tanking Utah team. On Saturday, he gets to face another tank brigade, the Washington Wizards, a team that plays fast and is one of the worst defensive teams in the league.

Small Forward

Amen Thompson is in the top 1% of athletes in the NBA, which is a league filled with one percenters. Think about that for a second. The shooting isn’t great, but he’s scored in double figures 12 straight times on mostly cuts, putbacks and in transition. He has shown some midrange ability and put up a season-high 33 points three games ago. But the allure of Thompson is that he stuffs the stat sheet on a nightly basis, especially in the defensive categories. Four games ago, Thompson messed around and got his first triple-double.

Power Forward

LeBron James. In MSG. Without AD. Need I say more?

Center

Nikola Jokic has finished with 40 and 39.25 FPTS in two of the last three games (Denver is playing Friday night but this piece has been submitted before the end of that contest). The sky is falling! The sky is falling! He has now failed to score at least 50 FPTS five times on the season. It happens, but if Jokic is on the slate, I’m going to click on his name. More often than not, he’s going to put up the most points at the position, and often on the slate. Jokic has put up over 80 FPTS 10 times this season, with four of those over 90 FPTS.
