The start of something special could be taking place very soon regarding flag football becoming a varsity sport for women. The NCAA now believes it should be part of the athletic program for schools in Divisions I, II, and III.
NCAA Drops News Release Around Flag Football
In a recent news release from the NCAA, it was announced that the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics made a recommendation that all three major divisions make a move to sponsor legislation to add flag football to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women Program.
The divisions will now go through a process of evaluating and reviewing aspects of the sport to see if it could be a successful addition to certain college athletic programs. At a minimum, the sport must have 40 schools sponsoring it as a varsity sport to maintain participation requirements.
Not only is the sport of flag football on the road to possibly becoming a major sport for women in college, but it is making headway in other areas.
For starters, it is set to join the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 for the first time. That might allow football fans to see some of the NFL’s best players take center stage for the first time.
Additionally, flag football has taken over the Pro Bowl as the NFL has made the change in recent years from players showing up in full pads to wearing flags instead. This came after players decided to play with less effort due to fears of not wanting to get hurt in what is essentially a meaningless game.
A Breakthrough for Women
The NCAA attempting to bring flag football into athletic programs all over is a huge victory for a lot of people, especially young women who love the game of football.
Whether you are required to wear pads or a flag, this sport should be allowed to be open to anyone and everyone. Now, the NCAA could be on the cusp of a major breakthrough as they have finally put women’s collegiate sports first.
