SAN ANTONIO ― Florida basketball and Houston have proven to be two of the elite teams in college basketball throughout the 2024-25 season.
On Monday, the Florida Gators (35-4) and Cougars (35-4) will meet to determine the season’s national champions.
Florida, under third-year coach Todd Golden, advanced with a 79-73 win over Auburn in the Final Four, rallying from down nine points in the second half. Houston, under 11th-year coach Kelvin Sampson, came back from down 14 points in the second half to topple Duke 70-67 in Saturday’s other Final Four matchup.
“Lives are so consumed by our next game, your next game,” Sampson said on Sunday. “I’m glad last night was not our last game, that we do have a next game. That’s a good thing for this group, because I’ve enjoyed coaching this team.”
Houston ranks first in the nation in KenPom adjusted defensive Efficiency and ninth in offensive efficiency, while the Gators rank second in the nation in KenPom offensive efficiency and ninth in defensive efficiency
“It’s going to be a contrasting battle that way,” Golden said. “Hopefully we can get the game up and down a little bit. They’re going to impose their will as they’ve done on everybody this year. We’re a pretty tough team also. We’re going to have to do a better job than we did last night. I thought first half we let Auburn take it to us a little bit. We can’t allow that to happen tomorrow night.”
