Former Alabama five-star basketball recruit enters transfer portal

Alabama men’s basketball forward Derrion Reid entered the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday night, sources told 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer.

Reid was a five-star prospect in the 2024 class ranked No. 17 nationally by 247 Sports. He was limited to 24 games during his freshman season, and played in only three games between January 12 and March 13 as he dealt with a lingering hamstring injury.

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Georgia native played at Prolific Prep in California, where he became a McDonald’s All-American. Reid was projected by ESPN last November as the No. 21 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, but he was limited to 14.1 minutes per game this season in his 24 appearances, including three starts.

Reid averaged 6.0 points per game and 2.8 rebounds while making 26.3% of his three-point shots this season. He was not among the four players Alabama’s NIL collective announced earlier this month would return for the 2025-26 season, heightening speculation about Reid’s possible exit.

Reid was listed at No. 64 in ESPN’s 2025 draft player rankings in early March before being removed from that list. Reid would have until April 26 to declare for the draft and May 28 to withdraw.

“Derrion is one of our best, positional size, athletic defenders,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said in February. “He’s done a very good job on different guys when he’s been healthy throughout the year. … He’s a guy you can put on a 1, 2, 3, 4. He’s got great size and can fly around.

“He’s going to be a pro. He came in a McDonald’s All-American. He’s got all the intangibles as far as toughness, great attitude, high IQ, he’s athletic, a lot of the stuff the pros are looking for. … We really don’t want to hurt his long-term career by rushing [his return from injury] to win a game or two. We’re trying to do right by him, do it right.”

Reid is the fourth Tide player to enter the portal since it opened last month, joining forwards Mouhamed Dioubate (Kentucky), Jarin Stevenson and Naas Cunningham.

Alabama has added former Florida State forward Taylor Bol Bowen to its front court this offseason but is losing forward Grant Nelson to expiring eligibility in addition to its transfer portal losses at forward. 6-foot-8 wing Amari Allen and 6-foot-8 forward London Jemison are among Alabama’s three freshmen signees.
