BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Alabama legend and NFL superstar wide receiver Julio Jones has announced his retirement from the NFL, he announced Friday.

The Foley, Alabama native was ranked as the top receiver in the nation in the 2008 high school class before signing with the Alabama Crimson Tide where he made and immediate impact and cemented himself as one of the greatest Tide receivers of all-time.

Jones became the first true freshman wide receiver to ever start in a season opener for the Tide in 2008, and it was a game where he caught four passes for 28-yards and a touchdown in the Tide’s 34-10 win over Clemson.

Jones finished his freshman season with 924 yards and 4 touchdowns and was named as the SEC Freshman of the Year.

In total, Jones finished his three year career in Tuscaloosa with eight 100-yard receiving games (second in school history) and totaled over 2,500 receiving yards overall while hauling in 15 touchdowns. He also amassed over 200 career yards in punt and kick returns behind and helped the Tide win the 2009 BCS national championship.

After his junior season, Jones declared for the NFL Draft where he was drafted 6th overall by the Atlanta Falcons where he made an immediate impact, just like he did in Tuscaloosa.

Within in few years, he solidified himself as one of the top receivers in the NFL and was arguably the best receiver overall in the league.

Jones is most known for his time with the Falcons where he had seven 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 10 overall seasons. He also played a critical role in leading Atlanta to their 2016 Super Bowl appearance.

After his time in Atlanta, Jones spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Jones finishes his likely Hall of Fame career with nearly 14,000 total receiving yards and 66 touchdowns. He was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, was a five time NFL All-Pro, and a seven time Pro-Bowler.
