A former college basketball player who had a brief stint in the G-League was arrested in Jakarta, Indonesia, last week after authorities said he was trying to smuggle drugs into the country.
Jarred Shaw, a Dallas native who played for the Tangerang Hawks, was the subject of a search conducted at his apartment May 7, in which law enforcement found 132 pieces of cannabis candies called Delta 9 THC.
The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police arrested Shaw after receiving a package that was sent from Thailand to the apartment in Cisauk, Tangerang Regency, where he was residing.
“An offense involving candies containing Delta 9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) implicating basketball athlete JDS was handled by the Narcotics Unit of Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police,” Ronald Sipayung, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport police chief said, adding that if Shaw if found guilty of the offenses, he could receive a life sentence or the death penalty.
Head of the Soetta Airport Police Narcotics Unit Michael Tandayu said Shaw was charged “in connection with the alleged occurrence of criminal acts in terms of acts of offering for sale, selling, buying, acting as an intermediary in buying and selling, exchanging, handing over, or receiving narcotics,” which carries a minimum sentence of six years.
According to the Associated Press, Indonesia last conducted executions of people convicted of drug crimes in 2016. The executions were carried out by firing squad.
Shaw, 34, played college basketball at Oklahoma State and Utah State and averaged 14.2 points a game in his final two seasons with the Aggies. He was drafted with the 17th pick in the 2015 NBA Development League draft.
“We do not tolerate drug use in basketball. Whether players, officials, court personnel or anyone involved with narcotics or similar substances,” Chairman of the Indonesian Basketball Association Budisatrio Djiwandono said. “PERBASI fully entrusts this matter to law enforcement.”
Djiwandono said that Shaw was banned for life from the league, and the Hawks manager said that Shaw’s contract was terminated for breach of contract.
