
A gleeful event resulted in tragedy when a 31-year-old runner suffered a medical emergency while competing in the Brooklyn Half Marathon Saturday morning, according to the New York Daily News.
Charles Rogers, of Manhattan collapsed and died during his first time running the race, the New York Daily News reported.
Around 8:11 a.m., Rogers experienced a medical incident and collapsed near the 8-mile mark at Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue, race organizers told the outlet.
Medics performed CPR on the aided runner at the scene before rushing him to Maimonides Hospital, where he could not be revived, the publication said.
“It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of one of today’s race participants,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of New York Road Runners, the organization that puts on the race to the outlet. “On behalf of the whole running community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”
Rogers, a former defensive back at Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota football teams, lived on the Lower East Side and worked in sales for Verizon. The cause of his death is under investigation, according to the report.
