Former Kansas State football All-American Terence Newman’s accomplishments already have been widely celebrated with hall of fame inductions from his high school and college alma maters as well as his home state.

But this past week, Newman was nominated for his most prestigious honor yet when the National Football Foundation included him among 79 players on the 2026 ballot for the NFF College Football Hall of Fame.

Newman, a Salina native who played cornerback for K-State from 1999-2002 after redshirting in 1998, left as one of the Wildcats’ all-time greats. In 2002, he not only was a consensus All-American but was also the Big 12 defensive player of the year and winner of the Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Over his 48-game career, the last two as a starter, Newman recorded 134 tackles and 10 interceptions, and he was just the second Wildcat to return both a kickoff and punt for a touchdown in the same season.

Following his senior season at K-State, Newman was the fifth overall player selected in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent 15 seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys (2003-11), Cincinnati Bengals (2012-14) and Minnesota Vikings (2015-17) with two Pro Bowl appearances.

K-State named Newman to its Ring of Honor in 2008, and in 2018 to the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame. He also was an inaugural member of the Salina Central Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019 and in 2021 was enshrined in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

As for the College Football Hall of Fame, only seven K-State players have been selected. The first two were coaches Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf in 1966 and Charles Bachman in 1978, followed by linebacker Gary Spani in the 2002 class, linebacker Mark Simoneau in 2012, coach Bill Snyder in 2015, running back Darren Sproles in 2021 and quarterback Michael Bishop in 2023.

Newman chose K-State after receiving all-state honors at Salina Central, where as a senior he had five interceptions, two punt return touchdowns and 10 catches for 251 yards and three scores as a part-time receiver. He also was the Class 5A state champion in all three sprint events — 100, 200 and 400 meters — as a senior in 1998.

Newman also briefly competed in track at K-State, winning a Big 12 indoor championship in the 60-meter dash and an outdoor title in the 100.
