Somehow, someway, Devin Askew is still a college basketball player. And he’ll spend his sixth (and likely final?) season in the Big East.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Askew has committed to play for Villanova in the 2025-26 season. This comes five full years after the 6-foot-5 guard started his college career at Kentucky during the shortened 2020-21 campaign. Askew has since stopped at Texas for a season, California for two seasons, and most recently Long Beach State for one season.
How does Askew still have eligibility, you might ask? His true freshman season at Kentucky was a free year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He then redshirted his first senior season in 2023-24 (his second year at California) after appearing in just six games. So yes, the soon-to-be 23-year-old still technically has one year of college ball left in him.
Askew will join Duke Brennan (Grand Canyon), Bryce Lindsay (James Madison), Braden Pierce (Maryland), and Zion Stanford (Temple) as incoming Villanova transfers.
Askew is coming off his best season yet as a college player. At Long Beach State in the Big West Conference, he averaged 18.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 36 minutes per outing. He started all 32 games played while shooting career-highs across the board in field goal percentage (40.1), three-point percentage (37.6), and free throw percentage (88.6). On3 ranks him outside of the top 400 among prospects who have entered the portal this offseason.
Most Kentucky fans want to forget the entire 2020-21 season, which ended with the worst record in modern school history. Askew, who was considered the top-ranked point guard out of high school, would certainly like to forget it happened, too. He averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per outing across 25 games played as a Wildcat, but just shot 34.5 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from deep.
Askew transferred to Texas after his lone season in Lexington. He appeared in 34 games for the Longhorns, but averaged just 2.1 points in 14.9 minutes per contest. Askew then spent the next two seasons at California, but injuries ruined both runs. He played just 19 total games during his time with the Golden Bears before finding his footing this past season at Long Beach State.
