Former LSU running back John Emery will pursue his seventh season of college football

Former LSU running back John Emery has decided to pursue a seventh year of college football, though it is unclear where he will play.

Emery announced the decision Thursday in an Instagram post in conjunction with his NIL agency. His agent told The Advocate they are “early in the process” and have not settled where Emery will play next season.

Emery had a seventh year available after suffering a torn ACL during a non-contact drill in practice last September. He had only played in one game, so he could receive a redshirt, giving him an extra year of eligibility.

It was Emery’s second torn ACL in as many seasons. After suffering a torn right ACL in November 2023, Emery entered the transfer portal during the offseason. He briefly committed to UCLA, but he ultimately returned for a sixth year with LSU.

Emery, a five-star recruit in the 2019 class from St. Rose, has rushed for 1,123 yards and 14 touchdowns over 38 games in his career. In addition to the injuries, he missed the 2021 season and the first two games of the 2022 season because he was ruled academically ineligible.

After returning from his first ACL injury, Emery was LSU’s leading rusher with 61 yards on 10 carries in a 27-20 season-opening loss to Southern Cal. He suffered another knee injury days later.
