Former Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer headed to Blue Jays on one-year deal, reports say

Max Scherzer will not be pitching at Globe Life Field next season — at least not as a member of the Texas Rangers.

The free agent agreed to a one-year deal worth $15.5 million with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, according to multiple reports, to return for his 18th MLB season.

The Rangers acquired Scherzer, 40, just before the 2023 trade deadline, and though most of his time in a Rangers uniform was riddled with injuries, he still helped lead the organization to its first World Series championship. He also was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause last season despite the organization’s disappointing campaign while attempting to defend their title.

Scherzer, who has 216 wins and is 11th on the all-time strikeout list at 3,407, said during the season he would welcome a return to the Rangers. But he also acknowledged that after his first two trips through free agency, returns are infrequent when a player gets to market.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to make one stop in Arlington in the 2025 regular season. Toronto plays a three-game series against Texas from Monday, May 26 through Wednesday, May 28.

Briefly: Among other former Rangers with postseason glory, relief pitcher Neftali Feliz also signed Thursday on a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Feliz has not pitched in an MLB game since the 2021 season as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
