Not every player can be a superstar. Some roles need to be filled, and some players excel in smaller roles. Romy Gonzalez is a great example. He likely won’t make an all-star game, but he’s ready at any moment to enter a game to face a lefty.
Last season, when Triston Casas was injured, the Red Sox had a hole at first base. They brought in Garrett Cooper from Chicago, but he never found his footing and was injured not long after being acquired. They tried Bobby Dalbec, but he could never quite handle major league pitching.
Enter Dom Smith. Smith joined the Red Sox in May 2024 and had a rough first month before settling in. From June 1 until he was released to make room for Casas, Smith hit .256 with five home runs.
He wasn’t a superstar, but he was a solid bat who played solid defense and always hustled. Smith became a fan favorite as well. Red Sox fans on Twitter frequently referred to his highlights as “Big Dom Smith Moments.”
Fast forward to 2025. At the beginning of the season. Smith was in the New York Yankees organization, crushing minor league pitching. At the end of May, he exercised an opt-out to try to catch on with a major league team. He found a home in San Francisco with the Giants and is once again providing a boost.

It’s early, but over his first eight games, Smith is hitting .320 with a home run and seven RBIs. The Giants have won seven of their eight games since Smith joined the team.
Toro is filling the Smith role nicely and has gathered a fanbase of his own. Still, I think some Red Sox fans would like to celebrate one more “Big Dom Smith Moment.”
