Former Tennessee offensive lineman Addison Nichols is back on the move again after spending just one year with Arkansas football.

After entering the transfer portal early in December, Nichols committed to SMU football last week shortly before the Mustangs season came to an end in a loss against Penn State.

Nichols started all 12 games at center for Arkansas last season where he earned a 69.4 PFF grade in 769 total snaps. The Georgia native struggled early in the season but got better as the year went on in his first season as a starting offensive lineman.

At Tennessee, Nichols redshirted and played in two games during the 2022 season before playing in 11 games as mostly a special teams player in 2023. The interior offensive lineman played 116 total offensive snaps during the 2023 season including a season-high 67 offensive snaps in the Vols’ regular season finale against Vanderbilt.

Nichols was also one of the first major recruiting wins of Josh Heupel’s tenure. The Atlanta native committed to Tennessee over North Carolina and Ohio State in the summer of 2021 becoming the first four-star recruit to commit to Heupel and his staff.

But Nichols is on to his third school of his college career and now has two years of eligibility remaining. SMU football has become a solid program in recent years under Rhett Lashlee’s guidance. In Lashlee’s three years as head coach, SMU is 29-12 and has back-to-back 11-win seasons.

The Mustangs made a splash in their first year in the ACC in 2024, losing in the ACC Championship game and making the College Football Playoffs.
