Former Tigers pitcher back with Mets after Tommy John surgery

A former Tigers draft pick is continuing his career as the longest-tenured pitcher on the New York Mets staff.

Right-handed reliever Drew Smith agreed to a one-year deal with the Mets for 2025 with a club option for 2026 as spring training gets underway, the team announced on Wednesday.

Smith is likely still a long way from seeing game action: he had Tommy John surgery in July and could miss the entire 2025 season as he rehabs. The surgery was his second.

Smith was a third-round pick of the Tigers in 2015 and spent parts of three seasons in the team’s minor league system. The Tigers traded him to Tampa Bay in 2017 in exchange for Mikie Mahtook.

The Rays flipped him to the Mets two months later and he’s spent parts of six seasons with the team since, recording a 3.35 ERA in 19 career appearances.
