Ryan Day Secures $12.5 Million Contract Extension After National Title
The Ohio State Buckeyes head coach signed a seven-year contract extension, reported to be worth $12.5 million per season.
This deal added three years to his existing contract, securing his position with the team through the 2031 season. It was a well-deserved reward for a coach who had faced intense pressure just a few months earlier.
Day’s journey to this contract extension wasn’t smooth sailing.
In November, after a heartbreaking home loss to Michigan, many questioned his future at Ohio State. The team’s poor performance in that game only fueled criticism from fans and national analysts. Ohio State’s offense was held to just 10 points against a Michigan team that didn’t meet expectations.
Despite Day’s strong overall record, the pressure mounted after his fourth consecutive loss to Michigan. Additionally, the Buckeyes hadn’t won the Big Ten since 2020 and failed to secure a national title during their appearances in the College Football Playoff in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
Ryan Day’s Remarkable Playoff Run and Resurgence
The Buckeyes’ performance in the 2024 College Football Playoff was nothing short of dominant. Ohio State started with a decisive 42-17 win over Tennessee, a game that some considered a must-win for Day’s job security. From there, the Buckeyes went on to defeat No. 1 Oregon 41-21 in the Rose Bowl, taking a commanding 34-0 lead in the first half.
The momentum continued as Ohio State traveled to Dallas and defeated Texas by 14 points. In the national championship game, Ohio State capped its playoff run with an 11-point victory over Notre Dame.

After securing the national championship, Day’s focus shifted to his long-term goals. In an appearance on The Steam Room podcast with Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley, Day spoke about the legacy he hoped to create at Ohio State.
“Woody Hayes is the last (coach) to win multiple national championships at Ohio State, Day said.” That’s something I’ve now set for myself. To be the next head coach to win multiple national championships at Ohio State. There’s still a lot more to be done.”
Day’s contract extension now provides him with the stability to pursue those goals. With a seven-year deal in place, he no longer has to worry about job security and can focus entirely on continuing to build Ohio State into a national powerhouse.
