FSU men’s basketball coach Luke Loucks has added another piece to the frontcourt of his first Seminoles squad.
UMass transfer Shahid Muhammad, a 6-foot-10, 205-pound post player, announced on social media Friday afternoon that he has signed with FSU.
Muhammad actually started his college career at Seton Hall three years ago but transferred after playing in just nine games. The Queens, N.Y., native then spent the next season at College of Southern Idaho, which is traditionally one of the premier junior college programs in the country.
At Southern Idaho, Muhammad averaged 5.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game. The athletic big man actually set the school record with 106 blocked shots in 30 games.
Muhammad was part of UMass’ rotation in the paint this past season, but he only averaged 12.5 minutes per game. Despite that lack of major playing time, he led the Minutemen with 47 blocked shots on the season.
He averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds while shooting 63.6 percent from the field and 68.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Muhammad’s best individual performances showed that he has some potential FSU’s coaches can work with. In a game against Temple, he scored 12 points with four rebounds; he hit 3 of 4 shots from the field and all six of his free throws in that game.
Against LaSalle, he recorded eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in less than 20 minutes of action. In 18 minutes against St. Bonaventure, he scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. He also registered five blocked shots in one game against New Hampshire.
FSU is expected to sign at least one more center to help beef up the interior, to go with Muhammad and sophomore Alier Maluk. That big man is expected to be an international prospect.
