Gage Wood makes College World Series history with no-hitter, record 19 Ks

Gage Wood is the story of the day in Omaha. The Arkansas pitcher has delivered a performance for the ages to carry the Razorbacks against Murray State in an elimination game, throwing the third no-hitter in the College World Series while posting a record 19 strikeouts.

Wood tied the CWS record of 17 strikeouts in a controversial way. Initially called a hit-by-pitch, it was ruled a strikeout upon review. He then threw strikeout No. 18 for the record. To complete the no-hitter, he recorded strikeout No. 19, a 9-inning CWS record.

Wood joined one of the most exclusive clubs in college history. He threw just the 9th no-hitter ever in the NCAA Tournament. In the College World Series, there were only 2 previous no-hitters, thrown in 1950 and 1960. Jim Ehrler of Texas threw the 1950 no-hitter against Tufts. Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State did it in 1960 against North Carolina.

Wood threatened to become the first pitcher in NCAA Tournament history to throw a perfect game. He took the perfecto into the 8th inning before allowing his first base runner via a hit-by-pitch. While it’s not the same, Wood does now own the longest perfect game bid in the College World Series since 1999, retiring the first 21 batters faced.

In the 8th inning, Wood’s pitch count crossed into triple digits, giving him a new career-high.
