For the first time in program history, Georgia baseball plays this weekend at traditional powerhouse Texas in a three-game series.
The showdown between the teams will be a top 5 matchup at UCFU Disch-Falk Field.
“It’s a raucous crowd, it’s going to be wild,” Georgia coach Wes Johnson said of a stadium with a capacity of 7,373. “You got to play really good baseball. It’s a very, very big ballpark. The weather doesn’t look good for homers this weekend and even if the weather is good for homers you typically don’t hit a lot of home runs in that ballpark. You’ve got to play really good defense, you can’t walk guys and you’ve got to get timely hits.”
The No. 3 Bulldogs (29-2, 8-1 SEC) enter the series with a nine-game winning streak, the longest of any power conference team.
The No. 5 Longhorns (23-4, 8-1) are playing their first season in the SEC. They swept a series at Missouri last weekend, won two of three at home against LSU and swept a series at Mississippi State but are coming off a midweek loss to Texas State.
Texas is third nationally in ERA at 3.13 but faces a Georgia team that leads the nation in home runs with 84 and is second in runs per game at 10.5 entering the weekend.
“I’ve played games in that ballpark where even (Shohei) Ohtani couldn’t hit it out,” Johnson, who coached as an assistant at Texas with Dallas Baptist and LSU, said about the impact wind can have there.
The Longhorns have not allowed more than 8 runs in a game in 15 home dates prior to the series.
Texas has won six national titles, the last in 2005, and its 38 College World Series appearances are most of any team.
Georgia enters the weekend in a four-way tie atop the SEC standings with Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas.
“We’re just focused on just playing good baseball,” catcher/outfielder Henry Hunter said. “That’s the biggest thing. Just continue do what we’ve been doing and continue to get better on offense, defense and on the mound. I feel like if we do that, we’ll give ourselves a great chance to win.”
