Georgia strikes big in transfer portal on Easter, lands three of top players available

Georgia entered the spring transfer window with several needs to address.

The Bulldogs needed to add defensive linemen and they were hoping to land a running back to bolster their room, which was hit by a departure by Branson Robinson. They struck quickly Sunday evening and addressed both in emphatic fashion.

Georgia kicked things off with a pair of defensive linemen, Miami DT transfer Josh Horton and Army edge Elo Modozie.

Horton, a four-star recruit in the 2023 class, played sparingly at Miami the last two seasons. But he’s a big, SEC-ready body who can come in and bolster UGA’s d-line depth.

Modozie, for his part, might be the most intriguing player in the transfer portal. A wide receiver turned edge rusher, Modozie ended the 2024 season with 34 tackles (eight for loss) and 6 1/2 sacks. His 37 pressures were fifth in the AAC, according to PFF, in just 236 pass-rush snaps. He’s a player who’s only beginning to reach his potential, but he should be able to step into UGA’s edge rusher rotation and contribute right away.

Josh McCray, for his part, was one of the most proven backs in the portal. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound bruiser ran for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns last season on 5.2 yards per carry.

Those three additions add to what is now a nine-player transfer class for the Bulldogs, which came into the day ranked 44th nationally.

What is the NCAA transfer portal?

The portal is an online database that players will enter their name into if they decide to pursue a transfer. Players notify their current school’s compliance office that they wish to put their name into the portal — typically, players’ names show up within 48 hours. Coaches have access to the database and can contact any player who has entered.

When will the transfer portal open?

College football has two transfer windows: one following the regular season and one following spring practice. The spring window will open April 16 and close April 25. Graduate transfers are allowed to enter at any time, however. There is also an exception made for players on a team whose head coach departs. Once a head coach exits a program, a 30-day transfer window is triggered for the entire roster.

Is a player forced to leave his school after entering the portal?

No. In fact, players sometimes withdraw their names from the portal and end up staying with their respective programs.

Oftentimes, however, the decision to enter the portal comes with some amount of displeasure on either the player’s side or the program’s side. Most players who enter the portal do not return to their previous school, and they’re often removed from the team immediately upon entering.
