On May the 4th, we remember the great wisdom of Yoda: “Do or do not. There is no try.”
Unfortunately, the Colorado Rockies did not win. They tried — racking up 10 hits and striking out just eight times — but ultimately they fell to the San Francisco Giants for the third time in three games by a score of 9-3.
The Force was not with Germán
Germán Márquez continued his struggles this afternoon, pitching just 4 1⁄3 innings. He faced four batters in every inning except for the fourth, but in two of those, he allowed solo homers to Willy Adames.
But then things really fell apart in the fifth. Luis Matos hit a double, but the Rockies challenged the tag play (it was upheld). Then Patrick Bailey singled to advance Matos, and Christian Koss grounded out to advance Bailey. However, Mike Yastrzemski singled to score both runners and put the Giants up 4-1.
Bumpy Bullpen
Angel Chivilli came in to relieve Germán and immediately threw a wild pitch to advance Yastrzemski. Adames came up again and Chivilli limited him to a double… but Yastrzemski still scored. Jung Hoo Lee flied out to right to move up Adames, but then Matt Chapman struck out to end the threat.
Chivilli tossed a 1-2-3 sixth before being relieved by Tyler Kinley in the seventh. Kinley immediately gave up three-straight baserunners — a Bailey double, Koss single and Yastrzemski walk. He did then retire Adames for the first time in the game, but then hit Lee on the foot to score Bailey. Chapman grounded into a force out at home, but then Wilmer Flores singled to score two more.
Seth Halvorsen replaced Kinley, but then LeMonte Wade Jr. singled to score Flores and top off the Giants’ scoring. Matos finally grounded out, but the damage was done.
Juan Mejia pitched the bottom of the eighth, striking out Bailey and Adames to bookend the inning, with a Koss ground out and Yastrzemski single in the middle.
Triples Triples Triples!
For the first time ever, the Rockies hit three triples in a game at Oracle Park. Mickey Moniak was the first, hitting one to center in the fifth inning — his fourth of the season. That was followed by a Jacob Stallings RBI single to put Colorado on the board. Alan Trejo then reached on a fielder’s choice, but Brenton Doyle grounded into a double play and Jordan Beck struck out to end the threat.
Three innings later, Beck got his revenge by hitting a sharp triple to center that almost went out (or at least could’ve been an inside-the-park homer in plenty of other ballparks).
Ryan McMahon said ‘hold my beer’ and squared up his own triple to Triples Alley to score Beck. But then Hunter Goodman, Michael Toglia and Kyle Farmer and got out to once again end the offensive threat (and the Rockies’ scoring).
Up Next
The Rockies finally have an off-day tomorrow before the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres come to town. Chase Dollander (2-3, 6.48 ERA) will duel fellow youngster Jackson Jobe (2-0, 3.38 ERA) in Game 1 on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:40pm MT.
