FAYETTEVILLE — Harold Horton, an iconic figure in college football across Arkansas, passed away Saturday after a lengthy illness. Horton was 85.
A former University of Arkansas player, coach and administrator, Horton took the head coaching job at the University of Central Arkansas for eight seasons (1982-89) and led the Bears to two NAIA national championships in 1984 and 1985 and seven consecutive titles in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference.
Horton made his mark in college athletics in Arkansas on multiple levels. Speaking to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 2012, just prior to his retirement as executive director of the Razorback Foundation, Horton reflected on the good fortune he had in being associated with winning teams throughout his career.
“Wherever I’ve been, we’ve always had a good team,” Horton said. “I’ve been blessed.”
Horton and his high school sweetheart wife, Betty, had two children — son Tim, an All-Southwest Conference standout for the Razorbacks in 1989 and currently an assistant at the Air Force Academy, and daughter Holly — and five grandchildren.
