Head Start with the Herd; Bison Freshman adjusting to college football during Spring

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – No matter how highly-touted the prospect may be, there is an adjustment period to the game of college football. The speed, intensity, and intangibles of the game at the College level can make it difficult for freshmen coming into any program.

“It’s definitely been tough, you can’t really prepare for it.” said Freshman Quarterback Zander Smith.

Two of the newest members of the herd have given themselves a head start, Quarterback Zander Smith and Running Back Myles Mitchell enrolled early to join the Spring Ball Campaign. Both getting the less-than-warm welcome that college football tends to provide.

“I’m just learning at full speed every day. All the meetings, and the practices, everything is a lot faster than I’m used to.” said Smith. “There’s a lot more mentally than I’ve ever had to deal with and then obviously physically… We do it right here. So it’s been a good experience but it’s definitely been tough.”

“Learning the playbook, learning how quick the game is, and how everything is here, just being up here as been a big difference from High School.” added Mitchell. “It’s been a great change and I’ve been adjusting, getting comfortable.”

While the physical parts of the game take plenty of time to get used to, both of these rookies agree that the mental aspect has been the biggest obstacle to tackle this spring.

“Just knowing the playbook. It’s a big playbook. It’s a lot. Way different than high school.” Mitchell said.

“They’re the longest plays I’ve ever read.” added Smith. “There was a big learning curve for me but I’m getting better.”

While the work in the Spring can be grueling, these young Bison are hopeful that these reps against other green and gold jerseys in the spring pay off against players in enemy colors this fall.

“Time will tell but I think it’s huge.” said Smith. “I think I’ll be 100 steps ahead going into the summer going into fall camp. I think it will help me out a lot.”

“I knew I’m one of those players that needed to be developed a little bit, I’m not the biggest, strongest, and fastest guy, but just coming up here early and getting a jump on things is a big thing for me.” Mitchell added.

Fans will get their first chance to see these two freshmen in action during North Dakota State’s Green and Gold Showcase in the Fargodome on April 25th.
