Highest-paid college football coaches: Where Steve Sarkisian, Ryan Day, Marcus Freeman, James Franklin rank in 2025

Two of the highest-paid head coaches are set to play in the semifinals of the 2025 College Football Playoff.

The chase for a national championship is down to just four programs, with No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Penn State, No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 8 Ohio State rounding out the field for the semifinals. Based on the results of the quarterfinals, it will be the Longhorns facing the Buckeyes, and the Nittany Lions taking on the Fighting Irish.

The Texas-Ohio State matchup means that two of the biggest names in college football are going head-to-head. Steve Sarkisian and his Longhorns are set to play Ryan Day’s Buckeyes in a highly-anticipated matchup.

Sarkisian and Day belong in the top five of the highest-paid coaches in NCAA football. Both took home over $10 million in salary this season and have a chance at winning even more if a national championship can be won.

That’s not to say the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish don’t have expensive coaches either. Penn State’s James Franklin comes in at No. 14 on the list, making $8.5 million for the 2024 season, and Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman ranks 29th with just over $6.6 million in 2024.

Here are the highest-paid coaches in college football.
