There’s a reason Texas football has the second-best odds to win the College Football Playoff Championship next season, and that’s because despite a number of NFL departures, the Longhorns bring back a wealth of talent across the board at different position groups.
And while some positions have more inexperience than others, there are few spots Texas doesn’t have at least one player with starting experience set to contribute in 2025.
“We can’t remain the same, so everybody’s got to grow,” Steve Sarkisian said ahead of spring practice. “And that’s the task that that we’re challenged with, because it’s easy to look at numbers and say, Hey, we’ve got three returning starters on offense. We’ve lost eight players that were starters a year ago, and we’re only returning six starters on defense. But I look at these numbers, and I say, Okay, we only, we’re only returning three returning starters off the team from last year. But that doesn’t take into account Ryan Wingo starting a few games a year ago, Trevor Goosby starting a few games a year ago, Arch Manning starting a couple games a year ago, Jerrick Gibson playing a significant role in some key games for us a year ago, Cole Hudson being a part-time starter for us over the past few years. Defensively, that’s not taking into account. Derek Williams, who’s been a starter for us in the past, Colin Simmons and the impact he had as a freshman, Jelani McDonald, Ethan Burke, to go along with some of the transfers on defensively Cole Brevard, Hero Kanu, Travis Shaw and Brad Spence, who all played significant roles at the schools they came from. So it’s easy to look at numbers and say hey, we’ve got a ton to replace. We do, but we also have some guys and some key ingredients that played some critical roles for us last season that I think will be impactful for us this fall.”
