COLUMBUS, Ohio — It started with a collection of Ohio State football players, many of them receivers, watching as Jamier Brown ran routes against air.
They stood in the northwest corner of the middle of three practice fields, expressing the oooh’s and ahhh’s that show why Brown can be part of their fraternity as a five-star player committed in the 2027 class.
But the quiet approval of his play quickly got loud as Ohio State’s one-day camp continued.
As it transitioned to a competition portion, Brown’s one-on-one battles with Danny Lang — a four-star cornerback in the 2027 class — stole the show.
Their first battle was physical, catching the eyes of players such as Ohio State receiver Brandon Inniss and cornerback Jermaine Mathews. Brown and Lang lined up for another rep shortly later, this time leading to current Buckeyes running from a distant view in the corner of the end zone to the line of scrimmage.
The receivers rooted for Brown, calling out what they felt was holding or pass interference.
“It makes me want to do more,” Brown said of the competition, “especially when the DB thinks he’s really doing something when he’s just grabbing me the whole time. Certain DBs — if they can’t grab, they can’t guard. He was one of them. He’s good. He’s nice.”
The defensive backs stood with Lang, disagreeing with the accusations from the other side.
Ultimately, the one-one-one competition displayed a pair of talented players with expectations of playing elite college football. But for Brown, it showed the level of competition those in coach Brian Hartline’s room look for.
It was a reminder of what he’ll be walking into — one of the most decorated position groups in college football history.
“They’ve really got a good brotherhood,” Brown said.
Monday also provided Brown a chance to meet Brady Edmunds — a four-star quarterback who is the only other player committed to Ohio State in the 2027 class.
Edmunds occasionally threw to Brown across various drills Monday, giving the two an opportunity to start developing an on-field relationship.
“It’s really good because we’re going to be the future of this team,” Brown said, “so I just can’t wait for it.”
