Sports Seriously
One of women’s college basketball’s most storied programs is back in the Final Four.
Spearheaded by Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong, the UConn Huskies are set to make their nation-leading 24th Final Four appearance on Friday at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, against top-overall seed UCLA.
This year also marks the 16th Final Four appearance in the last 17 women’s NCAA Tournaments for Geno Auriemma’s Huskies dating back to 2008. UConn’s lone miss in that span was 2023, when the Huskies lost to Ohio State in the Sweet 16.
Through four 2025 NCAA Tournament games, the Huskies have looked like one of the more complete teams in the 68-team field from start to finish and the team to beat. UConn’s domination can almost certainly be traced back to mid-February when the Huskies began to peak after their road win over defending champion South Carolina.
So that has stirred up some queries like: how many national championship titles do the Huskies have? And when was the last time UConn cut down the nets?
Here are answers to your most pressing questions about UConn’s championship history:
How many national championships does UConn women’s basketball have?
UConn has won 11 NCAA women’s basketball championships, all of which have come under Auriemma’s tenure.
The Huskies’ 11 national titles are the most by any women’s basketball program and tied for the most with the UCLA men’s team for the most in Division I college basketball, men’s or women’s. Two wins in Tampa this weekend for UConn would give the Huskies their 12th title.
Auriemma and UConn won their first national championship in 1995 against Pat Summit and Tennessee. The Huskies would then add four more in a span of five years from 2000-2004, with UConn three-peating from 2002-04 with star-studded talents like Sue Bird, Swin Cash and Diana Taurasi.
Then UConn would win back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 with Renee Montgomery, Maya Moore and Tina Charles, before Breanna Stewart led them to an unprecedented four in a row from 2013-16.
Here’s a breakdown of which women’s college basketball programs have the most NCAA Division I national championships:
- 1. UConn: 11 (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016)
- 2. Tennessee: Eight (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2008)
- T-3. Baylor: Three (2005, 2012 and 2019)
- T-3. Stanford (1990, 1992 and 2021)
- T-3. South Carolina (2017, 2022 and 2024)
- T-6. Notre Dame: Two (2001 and 2018)
- T-6. Lousiana Tech: Two (1982 and 1988)
- T-6. USC: Two (1983 and 1984)
When did UConn women’s basketball last win a national championship?
UConn last cut down the nets in 2016, when it defeated No. 4 seed Syracuse for its last of four consecutive national championships — a feat that has not been repeated by another program in the history of the women’s or men’s NCAA Tournament.
In their decisive 82-51 win over the Orange, Breanna Stewart stuffed the stat sheet for the Huskies, finishing with 24 points on 7-of-17 shooting, 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks.
To make the national championship game that season, UConn defeated Robert Morris (first round), Duquesne (second round), Mississippi State (Sweet 16), Texas (Elite Eight) and Oregon State (Final Four).
“What those 11 championships mean to me is how many great players I’ve had the opportunity to coach,” Auriemma said after UConn’s win in 2016, according to The Associated Press. “How many great people have come through the program. It doesn’t matter whose name is above or whose name I’m under. As long as I have those players in my memory, I’m good.”
