With the Notre Dame baseball season well underway now, it’s always interesting to keep track of the little things that make college baseball different than the other two major sports. For one thing, the postseason is quite a bit different thanks to the regionals, super regionals and then the college world series.
One of the other things that quite a bit different is how scholarships are awarded and treated in college baseball. At least it will be quite a bit different until this fall. How many scholarships does a college baseball team get? There’s one answer for this season and there’s one answer for everything after the House Settlement officially goes into effect.
How many scholarships does a college baseball team get?
As of right now, college baseball is afforded quite bit less when it comes to how many scholarships they can hand out. The limit that’s been in place for a little while now has been 11.7 scholarships per Division I team.
How those are awarded is often quite different from other sports. In basketball and football, generally a player is either a walk on or a scholarship player. But in baseball, there can be many players (as the roster limit is 34) who are on partial scholarship.
There can be several players that have the equivalent of that 0.7 part of the scholarship, or half a scholarship while some of the better players will get a fully scholly. With the House Settlement the biggest change to how many scholarships does a college baseball team get is that the scholarship limit will be 34. Every single player can get one.
However, the schools are not required to issue all 34 of those scholarships, so some teams will definitely have less than that. But in the fall of 2025, Notre Dame baseball could do a scholarship for every player on the roster, if they wanted.
