The Boston Red Sox might be one of many teams keeping an eye on the Vladimir Guerrero-Blue Jays situation.
Toronto missed the deadline to extend its superstar first baseman, and the 26-year-old is on track toward becoming a free agent in 2026.
Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro still kept the door open after he admitted Thursday that he was “optimistic” that the club would franchise the All-Star. Guerrero also isn’t looking too far ahead to free agency.
“Not going to shut the door on them… I’ll be open,” Guerrero told Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae. “But I’m going to leave that to my agents to work with that. If there’s something there, they’re going to continue to work with that. I’m just going to be on the field, focusing on my teammates, on my team, on my game.”
Those comments aren’t music to Red Sox fans’ ears, but this likely won’t be the end of the discussions around Gurrero’s future in Toronto. The 26-year-old reportedly is open to playing in Boston. However, it would not be a surprise if other heavy hitters would also be interested in signing the slugger.

However, it does seem like a conversation that might be revised around the MLB trade deadline. Until then, teams will focus on a good start for this season.
