Arizona will look to complete the sweep over in-state rival Arizona State on Sunday as the teams wrap up their Big 12 series.

After dropping out of the NCAA rankings this week, the Arizona Wildcats are doing everything they can to get back in them, including a sweep over their in-state rivals, the No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils. The Wildcats picked up wins in the first two games which dropped the Sun Devils to an overall record of 20-11 and a conference record of 7-4 for a spot in sixth place in the Big 12 standings. Both games have been close with Saturday’s being a 5-3 win in the Wildcats’ favor. Brandon Compton led the team in scoring with a ground out to first in the seventh to score Nu’u Contrades and an RBI single in the ninth. The other run came from the bat of Isaiah Jackson who hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The loss went to starting pitcher Jack Martinez who went seven innings on the mound, striking out an impressive 12 batters, but giving up five earned runs.

With Saturday’s win, the Wildcats are now on a two-game win streak and are sitting in third place in the Big 12 standings with a conference record of 8-3 and an overall record of 22-8. A single, a triple and a pair of homers propelled the team to victory in game two as Garen Caulfield hit a lead-off solo shot to left center to start the game. The Wildcats held their lead and extended it in the fifth when Andrew Cain mimicked Caulfield and hit his own solo home run to left field. Mason White added another two runs in the sixth with a triple to left field and Adonys Guzman closed out the scoring for Arizona with an RBI to none other than left field in the sixth. Owen Krambowski improved to 4-3 on the season after going 8.2 innings from the bump in which he struck out five batters.

Arizona and Arizona State have now met a total of 103 times and the Sun Devils hold a 57-46 lead in the all-time series. Tune in on Sunday night to see if the Wildcats can complete the sweep or if the Sun Devils can break their two-game losing streak with a win at home in the finale.
