High Point and South Carolina Upstate will continue a Big South series on Saturday night with game two in college baseball action.
The South Carolina Upstate Spartans will continue their weekend road trip on Saturday with game two of their Big South series with the High Point Panthers at Williard Stadium. The Spartans are currently in fourth place in the Big South standings with an overall record of 15-15 and a conference record of 4-3. The team picked up a 10-6 win in Friday night’s series opener against the first place Panthers. Johnny Sweeney had himself a night, going 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBI after hitting a solo home run in the first, an RBI single in the sixth and capped the night off with a grand slam in the ninth. Max Bianchini closed out the game on the mound, earning the win with two innings of throwing in which he struck out three and gave up no hits to the opposing Panthers.

Friday night’s loss was the Panthers’ first in conference play, dropping to 6-1 against Big South competition and 20-10 overall. The game was the team’s second loss in a row after losing to Wake Forest earlier in the week in a big 13-1 defeat. Against the Spartans, Charlie Jones came in for the save, but instead earned the loss after giving up two earned runs in 0.2 innings of pitching. Miggy Echazarreta and Christian Smith each finished the game with two RBI while Konni Durschlag and Jace Kohler each added one run to the scoreboard. Echazarreta and Smith were the only two Panthers with extra base hits with a double and home run, respectively.
High Point and Upstate have now met a total of 23 times in their history and the Spartans hold a 14-9 lead in the all-time series. Tune in Saturday night to see if the Panthers can bounce back and force a rubber match in game three with a win.
