How to watch the College Football Playoff semifinals

Just four teams remain in the College Football Playoff.

The semifinals for the 2024-25 season will be played Thursday and Friday, and they’ll feature Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas and Ohio State fighting for a spot in the national championship.

Here is what you need to know about the remaining College Football Playoff games.

College Football Playoff teams

This college football season was the first with the expanded 12-team playoff format.

The four top-seeded teams had a bye week during the first round, seed Nos. 5-8 hosted playoff games at their home stadiums instead of neutral bowl sites.

The expanded format allowed for some new twists to be added to the playoffs in an attempt to reward the higher seeds, but some of those may have backfired.

Each of the teams playing at home advanced to the quarterfinals to face the top seeds, but none of the top-seeded teams made it out of the quarterfinals after their bye.

The following 12 teams qualified for the 2024-25 College Football Playoff:

How to watch the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff

The semifinals begin Thursday with the Orange Bowl and conclude with the Cotton Bowl on Friday.

Here is the schedule — including viewing information — for the 2024-25 College Football Playoff semifinals, per the NCAA.

  • Thursday: No. 6 Penn State vs. No. 7 Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl at 5:30 p.m. MST on ESPN.
  • Friday: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 8 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl at 5:30 p.m. MST on ESPN.

The winners advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, which will be held on Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. MST on ESPN.

Regardless of which football program comes out on top, it will be the school’s first national championship in at least 10 years, according to USA Today.

Ohio State last won in 2014, Texas last won in 2005, Notre Dame last won in 1988 and Penn State last won in 1986.
