If Patriots opt to trade Joe Milton, Cowboys tabbed as ‘team to watch’ by NFL insider

Joe Milton’s future with the Patriots became a little bit murky after the team opted to sign Joshua Dobbs in the opening days of free agency, with New England reportedly being open to the idea of trading him.

The Patriots are exploring a possible trade of Milton and the quarterback has trade interest, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported. Fowler also tossed a potential trade partner for New England in a deal involving Milton.

“One team to potentially watch for is the Dallas Cowboys because they are looking for a good backup, a young backup, with upside that they may not get in the draft,” Fowler said on ESPN’s “NFL Live.” “Maybe they get [that quarterback] in a trade.”

While Milton isn’t a free agent, he might be one of the top experienced quarterbacks available. The 25-year-old, who New England selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, showcased his dual-threat ability in the Patriots’ regular-season finale win over the Bills, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown to go with a rushing score.

Even though that was Mitlon’s only regular-season action as a rookie, he made several highlight plays with his touted big arm. He also extended a handful of plays with his legs, leading to a remarkable touchdown pass that was wiped off the board due to a penalty.

Additionally, Milton has three years remaining on his rookie contract. So, unlike veteran free-agent quarterbacks, he’s cost-controlled for the foreseeable future.

As Milton impressed in Week 18, though, there likely won’t be many opportunities for him to see meaningful playing time in New England in the foreseeable future with Drake Maye at quarterback. With that being the case, the Patriots would have had discussions with Milton about a possible trade and would like to move him to the right situation if such a deal happens, Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported earlier in March.

Even though the Cowboys have a starting quarterback in Dak Prescott, Dallas might present a better option than New England to give Milton playing time. Prescott, who turns 32 in July, missed the second half of the 2024 season due to hamstring surgery.

Prescott is expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 season, but the Cowboys quarterback situation behind him is unclear. Primary backup Cooper Rush, who started in Prescott’s place last season, left to sign a deal with the Ravens earlier in March. The relatively inexperienced Will Grier is the only other quarterback currently rostered by the Cowboys as Trey Lance, their other backup in 2024, is currently unsigned.

It hasn’t been reported what the Patriots’ asking price for Milton is. However, some have speculated he could help them land as much as a third- or fourth-round pick in a deal, which could be more valuable to New England in 2025.
