Indiana football suffers from ‘brand bias,’ and it may cost them in College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff rankings debut after this weekend’s games. Where will Indiana football be ranked?

Joel Klatt, the Fox college football analyst, believes the Hoosiers are playoff worthy heading into Saturday’s game at Michigan State. Whether IU (8-0) will be in the top 12 is up for debate.

Klatt said on his podcast that the Hoosiers suffer from “brand bias” and haven’t gotten the credit they deserve for the first 8-0 start in program history under first-year coach Curt Cignetti.

The Hoosiers are ranked No. 13 nationally, which rankles Klatt, calling the Associated Press rankings “trash.”

“The AP poll is like a NASCAR race. It matters where you qualified, so it matters where you started,” he said.

Klatt compared IU to Miami (8-0), which is ranked fifth by the AP.

“If you look at the way teams have actually performed … and the playoff committee should rank Indiana higher than Miami,” he said. “But because Miami started up in the pack in the AP, (Indiana hasn’t) been able to overtake (Miami), so they’re still at 13th.”

Here’s the approach Klatt hopes the committee takes: “What the playoff committee is supposed to do is come in as if they did not see rankings to begin the year, and they want to take a snapshot of what’s going on after this week in our sport. … They’re not supposed to care where anybody started.”

Klatt isn’t confident the committee will do so.

“I think (the Hoosiers) have to go minimum 11-1. I don’t think that they would be afforded a 10-2 playoff berth like some of these other teams.

“You can build such a strong argument for Indiana. … This team is much better than 13th in the country. They just are.”

Even if IU finishes 12-0, it might not earn a spot in the Big Ten championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Oregon and Penn State are also unbeaten, and at the moment, tiebreakers don’t go the Hoosiers’ way.
