WATERTOWN — A fifth Watertown High School senior and Watertown Post 17 American Legion Baseball standout has announced his plans to continue playing the sport at the next level.
Infielder-pitcher Hayden Ries has announced on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account that he has committed to play baseball at Mount Marty University in Yankton.
He joins classmate and Post 17 teammate Treyton Himmerich, who announced his commitment to Mount Marty earlier this week.
Ries becomes the fifth Watertown Post 17 player to announce his plans to play college baseball, and all five — including pitcher-catcher Kaden Rylance (NCAA Division I South Dakota State), pitcher Talan Jurgens (NAIA Dakota State University) and shortstop-relief pitcher Nathan Briggs (NCAA Division II Wayne (Neb.) State) — are eligible to return for Post 17 next summer.
This past summer, Post 17 compiled a 46-25 record (the second most wins in a season during the nearly 100-year history of the program) and a third-place finish in the state Class A tournament.
In his first year as a regular at the Legion level, Ries batted .310 with six doubles, 57 runs scored, 34 runs batted in and 19 stolen bases. On the mound, he went 4-3 with a 5.30 earned-run average.
