The Hawkeyes have found their replacement for Ladell Betts. On Friday morning, multiple sources confirmed to 247Sports that Iowa is expected to hire Omar Young as the program’s new running back coach. Chad Leistikow was the first to report the news. Young has extensive NFL ties and is a well-versed coach. This past season, he served as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots last season under Jerod Mayo.
Prior to that, Young’s resume includes spending the previous two seasons with the Chicago Bears, for whom he initially worked as a quality control coach as well as assistant quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. He was also the Bears’ running backs coach for the final two months of the 2023 season.
He also coached the running backs in this year’s Senior Bowl.
This is the first hire that Iowa has made on the offensive side of the ball since Tim Lester took over as the team’s coordinator last season. The numerous NFL ties combined with his wealth of knowledge should make him a compatible piece to the Hawkeye coaching staff.
There’s a lot of eyeballs on the running backs entering this upcoming season. Kaleb Johnson stole the show in the Big Ten with his improvement and breakout junior season. Iowa will return Jaziun Patterson along with Kamari Moulton and a handful of young guns.
The Hawkeyes are starting spring practice up the upcoming couple of weeks. Getting Young to Iowa City prior to the start of practice was a big priority after Ladell Betts’ departure to the New York Giants.
